happened in china with them canceling orders for soybeans highlights the fact there may be cooling off going on in china. that exacerbated a selloff in the agriculture commodities and that translated to a selloff in gold and silver as well. what's interesting to note are some reports out from firms talking about what happened in commodities overall. so far this year we have seen losses overall for commodities sector. gold, though, has fared pretty well up 7% year-to-date. back to you, sue. >> thank you so much, sharon. let's bring in jeff kilberg. i know a lot of people are longer term quite bullish on gold. why are we see this pressure taking it apolo the 1700 mark. >> well, sue, i think we saw a knee-jerk reaction initially when boehner came out with plan b. that technically got the ball rolling to the downside. keep in mind one week away from christmas. these holiday markets you can really get pushed around. traders have to be aware on thin volumes. came down to the november 5th low, new low on the close, 1670. right now i think they are stripping out the inflation in gold and reall

think broadly of markets like china and brazil. these are markets that started to increase monetary easing. that have started to restructure their economies and certainly we think china has avoided very nicely a hard landing and will be back for growth track next year. >> talk to me about getting yield. that what everybody want right now. how are you doing it? high yield or investment grade securities or where? >> we are underweighted and they don't provide much of a yield these days. they are on high yield and we've had a barn burner of the year with high yield. we still think you can get high digit returns in 2013. and we are looking at global infrastructure in real estate as providing a nice sustainable yield for investors. >> the big debate down here for the past couple of days after the fed made its announcement is whether or not that will prick the bond bubble. where whether we are in a bond bubble or whether there was a bond bubble. where do you stand on that? >> it's interesting. when i think after bubble, i think of something that can burst and drag values down to zero. one

. am i right about that or wrong? >> yes and no. the point being if the fiscal cliff you look at china, eurozone, it is all coming together to create an environment of total uncertainty for a lot of the biggest investors in the world. pension funds in the u.s. are trying to manage the volatility of the funding levels, generating return. think of where the average u.s. pension fund is trying to again rate a return from 6.5% to 8%. >> it's not so much that they're concerned about a looming tax hike that might affect their portfolios as it is about the uncertainty that the cliff represents, that chinese economy represents, and that europe represents. >> totally. so they have two decisions. on the risk hedging they have to look where yield is going worldwide. that's the price of ensuring their liabilities. at the same time diversification is the other avenue, generating return. rather than awarding historically high allocations toward equities, move towards alternatives. >> not necessarily bonds -- >> i would say absolutely. on bonds it could be high yield investment grade bonds. it could
